The Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility is a modern full service animal care building with 14 kennels and 60 cat cages. The facility functions include specialized care of impounded animals, coordinating information for missing animals and preparation for testing animals involved with possible exposure to rabies, adoption of unwanted animals, maintenance of accurate computer records and collections of fees and management of office work. The facility is used by both Accomack and Northampton Counties.
The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office provides a facility manager and two deputies for the purposes of enforcing laws and regulations of the state and county. Animal control deputies impound stray, sick or injured animals and hold possible rabid animals for either quarantine or preparation for testing at the state laboratory. The duties of animal control deputies include responding to citizen complaints, investigating livestock of cruelty and/or abuse of animals, educating the community on responsible pet ownership and other animal related issues.
