The 2021 Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code became effective on January 18, 2024.  All permits issued after this date are subject to the 2021 code, with a one-year grace period that expired on January 17, 2025, during which local jurisdictions could choose to enforce either the 2018 or 2021 codes
