Summary/ Background: As of January 2025, the County’s Storm Drainage Program implemented a policy of using contractors “exclusively” for cleaning and maintaining the stormwater drainage ditches. These ditches are located throughout the 400sq miles of Accomack County. Keeping these ditches open and functional plays an important role in road safety and protects property from flooding. 12475 Hacks Neck Rd. drains excess water from State Route 631 Hacks Neck Rd., near Harborton, VA.
Scope of Work: 12475 Hacks Neck Rd. The successful contractor will clear and clean the drainage ditch back to its original parameters. Some projects will require a “snag & drag” approach to remove fallen trees and naturally occurring dams that restrict water flow. Other projects will require excavating leaf litter, debris and sedimentation to restore the original parameters of the ditch. This project is primarily a dredging operation. The existing structure provides drainage for State Route 631 Hacks Neck Rd. This project is required to relieve excessive water backing up on Route 631. The flow of water has been impeded by snags, deadfall, pine shadows and some silt. The proposed cleaning & snagging operation will start at State Route 631 and follow the contours of the existing ditch to a flagged point, prior to where this ditch enters the salt marsh. The project will terminate prior to entering the salt marsh / wetlands (Approximately 470 feet). (See attached map) Note: This project starts out as two ditches totaling approximately 975 feet paralleling the drive way to the residence located at 12475 Hacks Neck Rd. These twin ditches converge at a culvert under the private road about ¾ distance to the termination point.
Notes: The contractor will be responsible for contacting “Miss Utility” to mark any underground wires prior to beginning work. All excavated materials / culvert debris will be loaded and hauled off site to North Landfill.
